As from September 1 st., the Chilean PTO will begin applying to trademark applications the criteria and specifications contained in the 9 th. version of the Nice International Classification for Goods and Services. Although the said version does not include significant changes in comparison with the 8 th. version -which was in force until said date-, it is however a relevant improvement, as its adoption allows equating our local PTO in this field with the rest of foreign national Offices that observe such version.
On the same date the Chilean PTO launched an on line classification search engine at its website for the assistance of the general public named “On Line Classificator of Goods and Services for the Trademark Registration.” This tool will facilitate users to identify the class to which belong the goods and / or services intended to be distinguished with the mark. The search engine works on a free of charge basis and requires the insertion of key words used to refer to the description of the goods and / or services, providing the relevant class or classes that should be indicated in the application.
